Singapore: Chinatown, Boat Quay, Merlion Park

Back in early October, Hubby had to head to Singapore for work.  We decided to make a trip out of it and added a few days for us to explore.

We boarded our flight on Friday night and landed in Singapore on Sunday around lunch time.  We caught a cab to take us to our hotel.  After a quick shower, it was time to find some food and do a bit of exploring.  Our first stop was at the Maxwell Road Hawker Center, where Hubby had a bowl of noodle soup with wontons and fish balls (left) and I ordered chicken rice with veggies (right).

The food was yummy, but the weather was really hot and humid.  So, we sat on the outskirt of the open air hawker center to maximize the amount of breeze.  It did not help that Hubby was eating hot noodle soup.

With full tummies, we walked a block or so over to Chinatown.  Kind of strange that there is a specific Chinatown considering about 75% of the people in Singapore are of Chinese decent.  Above the subway station, there were lanterns of all different colors, shapes, sizes, etc.  I bet it would be really beautiful at night.

From Chinatown, we walked along the Boat Quay.

When I first saw the statue above, I thought it was a person bending over.  As I got closer, I was shocked to see the plaque read “Bird”.  Oops.  By this time we were dying to rip off our jeans that were sticking to our legs from the humidity, but we forged onward to Merlion Park.

From the deck we were standing on that looks back at the Merlion, there were also great views of the bay, the Singapore Flyer, the Esplanade, and the new Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Casino.  After taking it all in, we hopped on to the nearest subway (to avoid the heat) back to our hotel.  We also enjoyed a McDonald’s ice cream cone as well.

Back at the hotel, we took a much needed nap.  When we finally woke up several hours later, it was past dinner time and we did not know where to go.  So, we headed back to McDonald’s for a quick bite.

We had a nice first day in Singapore.  Stay tuned; there is more to come.
