Ben Tre and Eggettes

Monday, March 8th, 2010

A couple of weekends ago, we met up with one of my college friends E in South San Francisco.  Did you know that South SF is actually a city?  The plan was dinner at Mom’s Tofu House, and then boba/dessert somewhere nearby till he had to pick up his gf from SFO.  Turns out they are not open on Sundays, so we opted to try Ben Tre Vietnamese Homestyle Cuisine next door.

We ordered Cha Gio (deep fried rolls stuffed with ground pork , carrot, taro, onion and mushrooms), which were just ok.  They were fried well; crispy not soggy.  But, they did not come with lettuce to wrap the egg rolls, and I did not enjoy the taro texture/taste.

So, I forgot to take pictures of our entrees because I was too busy eating.  But, I had the Pho Tai Chin (rare beef and well done brisket noodle soup), Hubby had Pho Ben Tre Dac Biet (medley of beef, tripe, tendons and beef balls with rice noodles) and E had Bun Cha Gio, Thit Nuong/Bo (egg rolls and BBQ pork Vermicelli).  All were tasty, and we were stuffed.

After dinner, we headed to Eggettes in Millbrae.  I was really excited because I love Hong Kong pancakes and not a lot of places make them.  Unfortunately, I was really disappointed.  It was not very sweet, and the texture was too tough (almost like rubber).  I do not recommend these; better does exist!

Before we called it a night, E and I took a picture outside.  Gosh, I am short in tennis shoes!  Good times!

Big Apple: J’s Birthday

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

D gifted J with a trip to New York for his 30th birthday.  Such a great present for a milestone birthday! *hint, hint*  Amazingly, we were there at the same time and able to celebrate together.  For J’s 29th, they celebrated in Las Vegas with my parents.  J’s hoping that he’ll be able to spend his 31st with my brother somewhere.  haha!  J is a family friend from our Canada days. Our parents have known each other for over 35 years.  They are fabulous people!

Day 5, dinner at Savoy with J and D.  J said that according to some list it was the most romantic restaurant in NY.

J & D

Me & Hubby

We started with appetizers: Lobster, Scallops and Ham.  For entrees, we ordered one Venison (not pictured) and three Bass.  The appetizers were yummy.  The Bass was scrumptious.

Chilled Main Lobster: superior white potatoes, candied fennel, broccoli and dill agrodolce

Scallops – one of the appetizer specials

Salty Ham with Sweet Mustard and Baguette – one of the appetizer specials

Roasted Wild Striped Bass: parsnip “tostones”, garlic puree and parsley salad

For dessert, Junior’s Cheesecake was our stop.  We ordered a red velvet cheesecake, carrot cake cheesecake, and Junior’s famous fresh strawberry shortcake with strawberry sauce.  All were delectable and gratifying!

Happy 30th Birthday, J

We were so happy to celebrate with J and D.  It was great catching up and having a wonderful evening.

Big Apple: Sleep and Eat

Friday, February 5th, 2010

The trip to New York was a work trip for both Hubby and I.  Hubby went into the office, while I worked from our room at the Hilton Garden Inn, Chelsea.  The hotel was in a great location; it was really close to lots of restaurants, shops, and the Red (1,2,3) and Yellow (N,R,W) subway lines.  Since it was a business trip, we did not do much sight seeing.  But, we ate…and ate…and ate!

Day 2, Hubby had a team dinner/social.  So, I tried the sushi place on the same block as the hotel.  I ordered a California Roll from Izumi for $4.25.

When Hubby got home, I was dying for some Junior’s Cheesecake.  We headed to Times Square, picked up our whole cheesecake with strawberry topping, and enjoyed a quarter of it in our room.  6″ round for $19.95.  Their cheesecake is so incredibly delicious with the cake instead of crust bottom and yummy strawberry topping.  Just thinking about it right now is making my mouth water!

Day 3, we grabbed dinner with some of Hubby’s co-workers at Joe’s Shanghai.  We were late, so I was not able to take pictures.  The soup dumplings (xiao long bao) were really good – flavorful and filled with lots of soup.  The wrapping was not too thick, but I prefer thinner wrapping.  We also tried the crab meat and pork meat dumplings, but they were kind of fishy tasting.  $4.65 for 8 pork dumplings and $6.65 for crab meat with pork meat dumplings.

Day 4, dinner was with more of Hubby’s co-workers at Minca.  We both ordered the Basic, which is pork broth with salt and roast garlic flavor, with thin noodles.  The noodles were cooked to a great texture…not too soft, not too hard.  The soup base was tasty and not overwhelmingly salty.  $9.50 and satisfying!

So far, we have had pizza, sushi, cheesecake, soup dumplings, and ramen.  More to come!

Brother Visits

Monday, February 1st, 2010

A couple weekends ago, my brother S stopped by for a visit.  He and his college buddy N from New York headed to San Francisco to visit their 3rd college buddy A.  We picked up S and N from SFO and brought them back to the South Bay.

First stop…N, S, green robot and desserts

Next stop…Dim Sum in Cupertino with relatives

S, Auntie C, Cousin M, Uncle R, Me, Hubby

Then, we headed back to our apartment to show them our new place.  Hubby, S, and N threw a football around for a bit, too.  Then, we headed to Stanford Shopping Mall in Palo Alto.  It is a beautiful outdoor mall with a lot of great stores.  From there, we headed over to Stanford to visit another one of my brother’s friends W.  W showed us around campus.  In the quad, there was a beautiful church and mural.

N, S, Me, Hubby

After Stanford, we enjoyed a nice dinner at Zao Noodle Bar in downtown Palo Alto.  We ordered Chinese Chicken Salad, Pad Thai with Tofu, Yellow Curry with Eggplant and Beef, and Dumplings.  Everything was tasty and spicy.  We started the day with dessert statues and ended the night with desserts from Satura Cakes.  I love the strawberry cake.  It is fluffy and just overall yummy!

We had a great day with S and N.  We dropped them off at the BART station, and they headed into SF to spend the rest of the weekend with A.  I hope they come to visit again soon!
