The Day after Tax Day

Friday, April 16th, 2010

…was our dating anniversary.  I say “was” because since the wedding, Hubby and I decided to only celebrate our wedding anniversary.  So, I wanted to commemorate past dating anniversaries.

Five years ago today, we bravely ventured down to the San Diego Wild Animal Park for our first date.  I am not sure why we planned a first date that involved two hours in the car each way plus an all day activity, but we had a fantastic time and survived to tell about it.

For our 1st anniversary in 2006, we used our annual passes for some fun at Disneyland.  He has that same face, when I hang from his neck, too.  Hubby, you know you love it!

In 2007, we celebrated our 2nd anniversary aboard the Carnival Fun Ship to Baja, California.  We had a good time getting away from the weekend and eating lots of food.

We enjoyed dinner at Roy’s Restaurant and dessert from Beard Papa’s for our 3rd anniversary.  Yummy in my tummy!  I think the pink candles in the creme puffs are cute.  Don’t you?

To celebrate our last dating anniversary, we dined at Beacon in Culver City.  To continue the tradition from the year before, we also had four creme puffs from Beard Papa.  Too bad we will not be continuing that this year.

It amazes me how fast time flies.  In five years, we have created many wonderful memories, and I am excited to see what the future holds for us.  Happy Five Year Dating Anniversary, Hubby!

Honeymoon: Day 8 Cannes, France

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

By day 8, I could not believe how fast our honeymoon was coming to a close.  Cannes, France was the last port of the cruise and the last full day aboard the ship.  The water in Cannes was very shallow, so we had to be tendered to shore.  The tender boats are the ones that would be used in the case of an emergency.

Cannes is a small, beautiful city in the French Riviera.  It is famous for its luxury shops, restaurants, and hotels.  We followed along the Tourist Information map that detailed out a 2-hour walking tour.  Some of the highlights included: Musee de La Castre, Eglise Notre Dame Esperance, Marche Aux Fleurs, Marche Forville, Hotel Martinez, Hotel Carlton, Notre Dame de Bon Voyage, and Palais des Festivals et des Congres (not all are pictured below).

As the ship departed Cannes for Barcelona, the captain informed everyone that due to weather the already choppy Bay of Lions would be even choppier.  We were to expect 14′ swells from about 6pm to midnight.  That was not good news for me and my motion sickness.  To me, instead of rocking side-to-side, it felt like the ship was rolling in circles over the waves.  I made it through the Close Up Magic Show: Basilio Tabacchi, but had to call it a night afterwards.  That is why there are no more pictures for this day.  I felt really bad for Hubby because he spent the last night of our honeymoon by himself.  He watched the last theater performance “Lost Locos” Ole! and said that it was good.  After the show, he came to check on me, but I was not well enough to move around.  While I kept sleeping, he grabbed a steak dinner without me.  Bummer!  I had also planned to pack that night so that there would be less to do in the morning, but so much for that plan.  Packing had to wait till 5am when the wake up call rang.  Next up: Day 9 Airports.

Honeymoon: Day 7 Pisa, Italy

Friday, December 11th, 2009

The cruise ship docked into the port, Livorno, as the sun was rising.   Livorno is about 30 minutes from Pisa and about 90 minutes from Florence.  Personally, when I visited Florence in 2005, I did not think it was that interesting of a place.  So, we joined a half day tour that only visited Pisa.

Hubby and I joined the rest of our tour group #11 in the theater and then disembarked the ship to the motor coach.  We spent the whole time in the Piazza dei Miracoli, where the main buildings are the Battistero, Duomo, and Torre Pendente.  There was a local guide who provided us with information and stories about the square for about an hour and then the rest of the time we were free to explore on our own.

Piazza dei Miracoli, “Square of Miracles”

Battistero, “Baptistry”

Duomo, “Cathedral”

Torre Pendente, “Leaning Tower”

During our free time, we attempted to take a picture of ourselves and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  I say attempted because after about 50 tries, we still do not have a decent picture.  We even had several strangers attempt to help us, but most of the photos show the top of the tower cut off, crowds of people, or just did not look good.  So, the picture below is the best that we have.

Of course, we also had to do the pushing of the tower pictures.  These were a bit easier to do.

Funny side story:  There were two couples, probably in their 60s, who saw me taking the picture above of Hubby, and they wanted to do the same thing.  But instead of just one at a time, all four of them wanted to do it together.  On top of that difficulty, they had an older camera where the screen was less than an inch big.  Hubby took the camera duties and I was in charge of positioning their bodies and hands into the right places.  Hopefully their picture turned out well.

So back to the events at hand, we decided to take a “family” photo in the square.  This also took several attempts, but I think the “child” was a good sport and did not squirm or fuss.

After the half day tour, we had lunch aboard the ship and just lounged around the ship until dinner time.

The nightly theater show was Colorz performed by the NCL production cast.  Each segment, from the costumes, to the lights, and even to the lyrics of the songs, revolved around a specific color .  The best part of the night was the chocoholic buffet.  Everything was made from chocolate…the desserts and the displays.  It was absolutely beautiful and yummy.  When we went back to our room, we found a towel elephant (previous nights included a dog, a snake and some other animal we could not figure out).  The towel elephant and the “child” were instantly friends.

Livorno was the last port in Italy.  From there, the ship sailed on to Cannes, France.  Stay tuned for Day 8 and the last sightseeing day of our honeymoon.
