Weekend Getaway: Lake Tahoe

Friday, March 26th, 2010

LL and J asked us to join them on their mini-vacay to South Lake Tahoe last weekend.  In the almost five years that Hubby and I have dated, we have never been to the snow together, so we jumped at the opportunity.  I am so glad that we tagged along with them!  We had a fantastic time hanging out and enjoying the snow.

Friday night, we started our road trip.  First stop, Chick-fil-A in Fairfield for dinner.  Then, we arrived at Aston at Lakeland Village.  They offered a special that included 2 adult and 2 children lift tickets to Sierra.  We received great news upon check-in; it was actually 2 adult and 2 child lift tickets per night, so a total of 4 adult and 4 child lift tickets.  We also got an A-rated townhome which included 1 master bedroom, a loft, 2 bathrooms, washer and dryer, full kitchen, fireplace, and balcony.  The property was a little older, but the townhomes were roomy and right off the lake.  It was also in a good location in town near restaurants and shops.

Saturday morning, we woke up bright and early to hit the slopes at Sierra.  I had not been on my snowboard in 6+ years, so I was a bit scared and nervous.  Thankfully, everything went better than expected.  The secret to not falling off the chair lift: hold on to Hubby’s jacket.

I made it down the first green run (Broadway) without falling.  So, the boys convinced me to go with them up Nob Hill to try a blue run (Upper Sleighride).  I do not know why I agreed to go, but I am happy to report that I survived and it was not that bad.  Via the Grandview Express, our third run was Sugar N’ Spice.  I did not like that run because a lot of it was flat and resulted in shuffling rather than boarding.  We enjoyed lunch at the Base Lodge from Mama’s Kitchen – chicken tenders with fries, Belly Bomb (chili dog and chili fries), and BBQ beef sandwich with fries.  After all those carbs, we were ready to hit the slopes again to burn it off.  We did a couple runs all together, and then LL and I rested in the Base Lodge while the boys did a few more advanced runs.

How do we look after a full day of boarding?  Tired?

Back at Aston at Lakeland Village, we washed up and rested for a couple of hours before heading out for the night.  We grabbed some dinner at Thai Delight.  The dishes had a different flavor than we were accustomed to.

Pad See Ew with Tofu, Pad See Ew with Beef

Noodle Soup, Pad Thai

After dinner, we tried our luck at Harvey’s.  We played $20 each in the poker slot machines.  Hubby won $2.75 but it was not enough to cover my $7.50 loss.  We were beat and called it a night.

Sunday morning, we slept in to let our bodies recover.  Before heading home, we stopped by the lake.  The scenerey was beautiful – blue water surrounded by snow covered mountains.

Lunch in Berkely at Gypsy’s Trattoria Italiano.  Tasty and good sized portions.

Crazy Alfredo, Penne Gorgonzola

We all had a fabulous time!  Where to next?

Weekend Getaway: Santa Barbara

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

About a month ago, we decided it was time for a much needed weekend getaway. Hubby mentioned Santa Barbara several times, but we never got around to going. So, SB was the perfect destination for our little trip.

Day 1: When we arrived in downtown SB, we drove up and down State Street to take in all the restaurants and stores before deciding on a good place to park and walk around. Ultimately, we decided to park near Stearns Wharf and walk aroud that area.

While walking along the pier, Longboards Grill caught our attention for some grub. The restaurant is upstairs with a bar area and an outdoor deck area. The great thing was that it had a fantastic 360 degree view, but the food was just alright. We ordered clam chowder in a bread bowl and fried calamari.

After an enjoyable time in SB, we headed to the Camarillo Premium Outlets to get our shop on. We hit up a few stores, tried on some clothes and shoes, and spent some money. Tired from the day’s events, we grabbed delicious In-n-Out cheeseburgers and pigged out in our hotel room.

Day 2: My brother “S” and his girlfriend “C” drove up to our hotel to spend the day with us. Our hotel was across the street from San Buenaventura State Beach, so we spent the morning on the sand. I have always wanted to take a photo on the lifeguard tower, so I took advantage of the opportunity.

S and C played a few games of beach volleyball, while Hubby and I threw around a football.

After we had our fill of the beach, we drove north to Nojoqui Falls. It was an extremely short and easy hike (less than 1 mile roundtrip). Too bad it was the wrong season, so the fall wasn’t flowing. There were a few droplets of water and quite a few pleasant hikers along the path.

Next stop – Solvang. The quaint little town was bustling with tourists. The lines in the bakeries were so long that we had to pass up buying any Danish cookies. We did try the Aebleskiver which was like a giant donut hole covered in raspberry sauce.

Our last adventure for the day was Kalyra Winery from the movie Sideways. The tasting menu consisted of eight different wines. I’m definitely not a wine connoisseur nor a wine fan, so I can’t say much about the wines. But, the best tasting option by far was the Kalyra NV Black Muscat. It was a dessert wine with a very sweet and tasty flavor.

It was a packed weekend of fun, new points of interest, yummy food, and great company.

Highlights: Stearns Wharf, State Street, Camarillo Premium Outlets, San Buenaventure State Beach, Nojoqui Falls, Solvang, Kalyra Winery
