hot hot hot

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Sometime last week, I woke up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.  I was soaked from head to toe and so were my jammies.  It was very unpleasant and rather disgusting.  I got up to dry off and change pjs.  Not wanting to lay back down in the sweat, I rolled to the middle of the bed and on to Hubby’s side of the bed.  Lucky him!

In the morning, I told Hubby about how I was sweating bullets in the middle of the night.  He said it was because I stole all the blanket and was wrapped up like a burrito.  To set the record straight, I am NOT a blanket stealer!  Anyways, I still have not figured out what caused that night of grossness, but our down comforter does trap a lot of heat.  Could that be the culprit?

Our lovely friends A&A bought us the Charter Club Level 2 Damask Stripe Down Comforter off our wedding registry.  It says “lightweight”, so I was not sure if it would actually keep us warm in the winter months.  No problems; we are definitely warm.  Maybe even hot…sometimes it feels like being in a sauna!

Our lovely friends C&V bought us the Charter Club Blanket, Damask Stripe Collection also off our wedding registry.  The hope was that this blanket would be perfect for the summer months.  It may look thin, but it actually provides a lot of warmth.  I am thinking we might just use this during the winter months and something that does not trap any heat for the summer.

Before getting married, my only experiences with down comforters were in hotels.  I figured “lightweight” would mean it would not trap as much heat.  I cannot even imagine how hot it gets under the Level 6 down comforter.

Have you had night sweats due to your blanket?  Is there a way for the down comforter to not trap so much heat?

I absolutely LOVE my engagement and wedding rings.  Hubby figured it would be best if I helped him pick out the rings.  He knows me so well!  I know that the whole engagement ring concept may be a ploy by the diamond industry to increase sales.  Regardless, I love my rings.

After the wedding, many people told me that the correct order is to wear the wedding ring below the e-ring.  That way, the wedding ring is closer to your heart.  Great sentimental meaning or  just another ploy by the diamond industry?  I mean, the e-ring is usually more expensive than the wedding band, so if it were to fall off, then the more expensive stone would need to be replaced.

To avoid the risk, I wear my e-ring below my wedding band.  I feel more secure knowing that there is a potential buffer.  I rarely see people wear their e-ring closer to their heart.  But, when I do, I get a little excited.  It is good to know that I am not the only one breaking from tradition.

What order do you wear your rings?  Why?

Wedding Photo Books

I am really happy with the results of our wedding photo books from Shutterfly, despite the bad delivery I wrote about here.  I made the 8.5″ x 11″ hard cover photo books with 20 pages.  The template is user friendly and provides a lot of different layout options for photos and text.  The print quality was what I expected, and everything was the same as it appeared on the screen.  I also liked the fact that we had the option to write text on the spine of the book.

Unfortunately, some of the layouts do not have the flip view, so I was not able to have them on side-by-side pages.  Also, the 1st page starts on the right (left is blank) and the 20th page ends on the left (right is blank if you do not pay for additional pages).  I figured that the two blank pages would be the same type of material; however, the blank 21st page is the same texture as the 20th page because the 22nd page has the Shutterfly logo printed on it.  After the 22nd page, the next blank page is the same texture as the blank page before the 1st page.  So basically, there was a random blank 21st page.  Had I paid for the additional page 21, I wonder if the Shutterfly logo would still be on page 22.

At the time, the specials were buy 1, get additional at 50% off and free shipping.  Cost breakdown:
1 x $34.99 = $34.99
8 x $34.99 x 50% = $139.96
Tax = $14.34
Shipping = $0
Total = $189.33 (approx $21/book)

I think they turned out fantastic, and we hope our relatives enjoy them!

Flying Object

Dear UPS,

I doubt you are reading this; but if you are, I hope that you impress upon your delivery personnel the importance of customer safety and package integrity.

In December, I ordered several photo books of our wedding from Shutterfly to give to our parents and relatives for Christmas.  For some reason, the photo books were shipped in four separate packages (three on one day and one the day after).  On the first day of delivery, around 3:30pm, I started to wonder where the packages were, so I opened the door and found one of the packages half under the patio fence and half exposed on the walkway leading up to the front door.  I excitedly picked it up and went inside to check on the delivery of the other two packages expected to arrive that day.  UPS tracking indicated that they were already delivered, too.  So, I opened the patio door and headed outside to find the other two packages.  The lovely UPS delivery guy had slid them under the patio fence to prevent theft and rain damage.

Everything sounds great so far, right?

From my desk, I can see the top of the UPS truck over the patio fence.  This is the view from my desk:

So, the next day I anxiously awaited the arrival of the last package.  I saw the UPS truck pull up and I giddily hopped out of my chair to open the door.  To my surprise, when I opened the door, the passenger delivery man had hurled my precious wedding photo book from the truck to the door.  You read that right; he did not get out of the truck and instead just chucked the package about 20 feet to the door.  I stood in the doorway with my eyes and mouth wide open in shock.  I could not believe that he had just thrown the package without any regard for it.  Also, if he had thrown it any harder and I had opened the door a second earlier, the package would have hit me.  UNBELIEVABLE!?!?  Both, the passenger and the driver apologized, but I was already scarred by the poor handling of my package.  How can a representative of UPS do such a horrible thing, especially around the holidays?

This is a diagram to show the distance the UPS guy threw the package:

Luckily, Shutterfly packaged the photo book well.  Otherwise, it could have been damaged.  This is a picture of the dent in the package where it hit the side of the door:

I hope that you take my incident as a training point for your employees.  Just because you think someone is not home, does not mean you can throw their package.  It is not good service to throw packages because what is inside the package is probably important to the sender or receiver.  Basically, treat the package the same way you would expect your package to be treated.

Sincerely,
Jackie

Bye Bye 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It is astonishing how fast time flies.  2009 is drawing to a close.  Recently, on the tv show Medium, the 16 year old daughter was mad at her parents for picking her up from a sleepover with her friends and 18 year old boys.  The mom explained to her that the time would come when she will be 18 and can have fun at such parties.  But, the time she spent being mad at her parents would just *poof* be gone, and she would not get those precious seconds back.  Thinking about that, I am going to strive to live each moment to the fullest because once it is gone; it is gone.

2009 was full of events, experiences and changes for us.  Here are the highlights:
